A Gentle Madness of Collecting and
Preservation
Built over several decades, the Lusher Collection documents the rich history of the American Southwest, the United States–Mexico borderlands, and Northern Mexico from 1550 to the present. Guided by the theme "The Border and Beyond," the collection presents the region through American, Native American, and Mexican perspectives, offering a balanced view of the people, cultures, and events that have shaped the borderlands.
The collection contains, without limits, rare books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, saddles, firearms, spurs, pottery, beadwork, and other artifacts, with a strong emphasis on exceptional condition and historical significance. It represents diverse political, military, religious, and cultural viewpoints, including those of the United States, Mexico, Native American tribes, and European powers.
The collection extends to the preservation and protection of the Texas Longhorn, highlighting the role this special breed of cattle played in establishing the state's cattle industry and its impact on the state’s history. Ted Lusher's interest extends beyond the Longhorn’s role; it includes the discovery and
documentation of ranchers, the men and women, vaqueros, trail drivers, wranglers, and cowhands who rounded up wild Longhorns and drove them to the Kansas railheads. Although not technically part of the "collection," it is regarded by Ted as a living extension, passion, and tradition.
