THE LUSHER COLLECTION

Built over several decades, the Lusher Collection documents the rich history of the American Southwest, the United States–Mexico borderlands, and northern Mexico from 1550 to 1950. Guided by the theme "The Border and Beyond,"the collection presents the region through both American, Native American, and Mexican perspectives, offering a balanced view of the people, cultures, and events that shaped the borderlands.

The collection includes rare books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, saddles, firearms, spurs, pottery, beadwork, and other artifacts, with a strong emphasis on exceptional condition and historical significance. It represents diverse political, military, religious, and cultural viewpoints, including those of the United States,

Mexico, Native American tribes, and European powers.

 

 

 

 

​​​While centered on the borderlands, the collection also contains important works related to the exploration and settlement of the American West, including materials connected to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, George Catlin, and McKenney & Hall. A primary focus of the collection is the history of Texas and its pivotal role in the development of the Southwest.

Complementing the library and artifact collection is a distinguished collection of original paintings by acclaimed Western artists whose work celebrates the landscapes, history, and heritage of Texas.

The preservation of the Texas Longhorn and its legacy in the cattle industry has long been a special interest of Mr. Lusher. His collection reflects the stories of the ranchers, vaqueros, trail drivers, wranglers, and cowhands whose efforts shaped the American West. Continuing that tradition today, Mr. Lusher maintains a herd of Texas Longhorns on his ranch, Candy Mountian.
